An excellent introduction to our most maligned monarch! - At last, a decent introduction to the life and reign of Henry VIII.Whilst not ignoring Henry s darker side, Wooding places Henry and his policies firmly in context - explaining his views and actions as the product of a man of his age and not judging him by modern standards. On the way she neatly dispatches several myths - revealing a man unswayed by factions at court, displaying clear and consistent religious policies and one who had surprisingly few mistresses! It is unfortunate that this book will undoubtedly gain less attention than that by a certain TV historian this year. That is a crying shame because this is not only an excellent work of scholarship - it is also a very good read!
